COMMUNITY INFORMATION
We think Alta is a great place to live and we’re sure you would agree! Alta’s a great place to raise kids. Our shared school district with Aurelia, IA is considered one of the premier districts in Northwest Iowa where young people can participate in a wide range of activities – sports, drama, music, and student government to name a few – as they receive a top-notch education. Contact our school to find out how you can become an Alta-Aurelia Warrior!
Alta residents of all ages have plenty of cultural and recreational opportunities. Our city park boasts a wooden “castle” playground built entirely with volunteer labor. Our baseball/softball complex is one of the finest in the area. We have a community center, one public and two private golf courses, a public swimming pool, and an active community theatre. Our Community Library is located and shared with the Alta school and has Internet services, e-books, and allows inter-library loan service for patrons. Take a drive around and see the sleek windmills that generate power for nearly 71,000 households each year. Alta is also the home of the Buena Vista County Fair held every summer and the popular Buena Vista Raceway packs in auto-racing fans all summer long. Take a peek at our Community Calendar for a list of upcoming events in our area!
We’re justifiably proud of our own customer-owned Municipal Utilities Company – since 1895 it’s been providing the area with water and electricity. Alta-Tec also offers telephone, digital cable, and high-speed Internet access.
You’ll feel safe here in our hometown too. A highly-rated volunteer Fire Department and two Buena Vista County Sheriff Deputies watch out for us and we’ve recently added expanded 911 service. We’re confident that you’ll find all of the members of the City staff extremely helpful. Within six miles you’ll find a regional medical center, 3 medical clinics, several dentists, county courthouse, and regional airport.
On Sunday, worship with one of our five in-town congregations, or one of the many in the surrounding rural areas.
We are located in Northwest Iowa, approximately 6 miles from Storm Lake, IA; approximately 1 hour from Sioux City, IA to the west and Fort Dodge, IA to the east; and approximately 2½ hours from Omaha, NE; Sioux Falls, SD; and Des Moines, IA. Close by, Storm Lake, is a favorite destination for boaters and fishers, while the Hanover Historic Village south of Alta brings history to life with its restored 1930’s store, machine shed, house, and working steam engine.
